Kathmandu, 10 October : Bada Dashain, the greatest festival of the Hindus, begins from today. The first day of Dashain, also known as Ghatasthapana is being observed by sowing seeds of Jamara at home and temples.
“Ghatasthapana” that falls on Aswin Shukla Pratipada, the first day of the bright half of the lunar calendar in the month of Asoj. Jamara is kept as the blessing of Goddess Durga on the 10th day of Bijaya Dashami by Hindu Nepalis worldwide. Usually the head member of the family plants Jamara after purifying himself/herself by taking a holy bath and wearing clean clothes.
Also today, prayers are offered to goddess Mahakali, Mahalaxmi and Mahasaraswati at the Dashain Ghar, marking the beginning of the Navaratri.
The auspicious hour for observing Ghatasthapana was at 7:15 am today, according to Nepal Calendar Determination Committee.
