2019 Oscars will have no host for the first time in 30 years

Agency, 11 January : The 2019 Oscars will break in its 30 year tradition by having no host at this year’s ceremony.

A source from the Academy Awards told Variety that the board had struggled to find a suitable replacement for Kevin Hart, who was stepped down within hours of being selected.

It’s expected producers will instead call upon a selection of A-list talent to introduce various segments of the show as well and increase the number of musical interludes. But time is fast running out with the ceremony now just six weeks away from airing live at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre.

In December, US comedian and actor Kevin Hart confirmed he’d be taking over from talk show host Jimmy Kimmel to front the 91st Academy Awards.

He announced the news on his Instagram page , telling fans ‘it was the opportunity of a lifetime.’ But just hours later Kevin stepped down from the role after homophobic comments he made resurfaced online.

The tweets originally posted between 2009 and 2011, contained offensive language towards the LGBT community.

Amid the growing controversy and after refusing the Academy’s request to apologise, Kevin announced on Twitter he was stepping aside.

He said: “I have made the choice to step down from hosting this year’s Oscar’s…this is because I do not want to be a distraction on a night that should be celebrated by so many amazing talented artists.

Former host Ellen DeGeneres welcomed Kevin as a guest on her talk show in the wake of the scandal.

It was reported the Academy was considering asking the comedian back if he used the interview as an opportunity to apologise for his actions. But the comedian was widely criticised for claiming he had been made the victim of internet trolls.
