Kathmandu, 26 January : The House of Representatives is holding an election for a new Speaker today. Ruling party Nepal Communist Party Standing Committee member Agni Sapkota is only candidate for the post.
Sapkota’s candidacy was proposed by NCP Parliamentary Party deputy leader Subas Nembang and seconded by NCP Chief Whip Dev Gurung, lawmaker Onsari Gharti and Rastriya Janata Party Nepal lawmaker Laxman Lal Karna.
Similarly, the Supreme Court (SC) is hearing a case filed against Sapkota today. Senior Advocate Dinesh Tripathi had filed a writ against him on Friday.
The post of Speaker has been lying vacant after former Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara resigned from the post on October 1 following rape charges.
