Martyrs day being observed today

Kathmandu, 30 January : Martyrs Day is being observed across the country today by paying tributes and respects to those who sacrificed their lives for the sake of the country and people. Every year, Magh 16 in the Nepali calendar is marked as the National Martyr’s Day.

On the occasion of Martyrs Day, a tribute is being given to known unknown martyrs and rally were taken from Ratnapark, Shanti Batika to Saheed Memorial Lainchaur till today. Similarly, in the memorial of the first martyr, Lakhan Thapa, a program is being held to pay tributes in the National Martyr Monument which is under construction in Gokarneshwar of Kathmandu.

Shukraraj Shastri, Dharma Bhakta Mathema, Dasharath Chand and Gangalal Shrestha are the four martyrs who gave up their lives to free the country from the tyranny of Rana autocracy and start democratic tradition. Shukraraj was hanged from a tree near Pachali of Teku on Magh 10, 1997 BS, while  Dharma Bhakta was hanged in Sifal on Magh 13 and Dashrath Chand and Gangalal were shot  at Shobha Bhagawati on Magh 15 by the then autocratic Rana rulers.
